Make Your Plans For Saturday, July 10 , 2020, The 26th Annual Marathon Underwater Music Festival

Set for 10a.m. to 2p.m., this marine musical event is staged by Keys radio station US1 Radio 104.1 FM. The music is broadcast underwater via Lubell Laboratory speakers suspended beneath boats positioned at the reef.

Divers and snorkelers might encounter “Alice in Waterland”, the “Cheshire Catfish” and their fictional friends beneath the sea during the 26th Annual Underwater Music Festival, set for Saturday, July 10th, in the Lower Florida Keys.

The quirky underwater concert takes place at Looe Key Reef, an area of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary approximately six miles south of Big Pine Key. Each year, the subsea songfest draws as many as 600 divers and snorklers to explore the colorful diversity of marine life that characterizes continental America’s only living coral barrier reef.

The 2010 festival offiers an offbeat salute to the classic children’s tale “Alice in Wonderland” and the 2010 film it inspired, with underwater appearances by divers costumed as Alice, the “Mad Haddock”, “Mock Sea Turtle”, “March Herring” and other take-offs on the story’s memorable characters.

Billy Causey Of NOAA States Key West At Low Risk For Oil Spill Contamination

No oil or residue from the Transocean/BP oil spill – positioned 500 miles to the
northwest of Key West – has reached the Keys since the April 20 explosion,
according to the U.S. Coast Guard and National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration. No oil impacts are expected in the near future, NOAA officials
said, due to the Loop Current’s separation from waters near the spill site.

The attached video is an interview with Billy Causey, superintendent of the
southeast region for NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuaries, which includes the
Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Causey discusses the Keys’ current low
risk for impacts and how the Keys would be affected with tar balls if conditions
change.

An Amber In Key West FL Video Feeding The Manatees

Manatees are large, gray aquatic mammals with bodies that taper to a flat, paddle-shaped tail. The manatee’s closest relatives are the elephant and are believed to have evolved from a wading, plant-eating animal.

Manatees can be found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals, and coastal areas — particularly where seagrass beds or freshwater vegetation flourish.

Manatees are gentle and slow-moving animals. Most of their time is spent eating, resting, and traveling. Manatees are completely herbivorous. They eat a large variety of submerged, emergent, and floating plants and can consume 10-15% of their body weight in vegetation daily.

Because they are mammals, they must surface to breathe air. They may rest submerged at the bottom or just below the surface of the water, coming up to breathe on an average of every three to five minutes.
