Billy Causey Of NOAA States Key West At Low Risk For Oil Spill Contamination

No oil or residue from the Transocean/BP oil spill – positioned 500 miles to the
northwest of Key West – has reached the Keys since the April 20 explosion,
according to the U.S. Coast Guard and National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration. No oil impacts are expected in the near future, NOAA officials
said, due to the Loop Current’s separation from waters near the spill site.

The attached video is an interview with Billy Causey, superintendent of the
southeast region for NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuaries, which includes the
Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Causey discusses the Keys’ current low
risk for impacts and how the Keys would be affected with tar balls if conditions
change.
